Utilization of Online Patient Registration and Pre-admissions for Ambulatory Surgery

Over the 20 years that I have run One Medical Passport, probably the most frequent question that I get asked from ambulatory surgery centers that are considering an online pre-admissions system is: “What percentage of my patients can I expect to use the system?”

At One Medical Passport, we’re pretty data-driven, so I thought that it would be helpful to share some recent numbers so that facilities that are considering online patient pre-admissions screening can know what to expect.

The table below shows our actual stats for the first part of 2019. The first thing that jumps out is how remarkably consistent the percentages are from month to month. About 85-90% of all scheduled cases have a completed Medical Passport (MP). Of that number, 75% are patient-created, and 25% are facility-created, i.e., done by a preop nurse.

Another interesting statistic that we track is: Of the Medical Passports that are created, how many are new, and how many are an update of an existing Medical Passport? (Once created, a patient can use his/her Medical Passport anywhere, and simply needs to update or confirm the information it contains.) The table below answers this question.

Once again, it is amazing how consistent the numbers are from month to month. Roughly speaking, about 75% of all Medical Passports are newly-created, and about 25% are updated from a previous Medical Passport. When you consider that approximately 14 million patients in the U.S. have a Medical Passport, it’s not surprising that 50,000 – 60,000 of those patients have another procedure every month.
